The Ford 1.6L EcoBoost is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine from Ford Motor used to power subcompact, compact and midsize cars and utility vehicles, or more commonly known as CUVs. Featuring a dual overhead cam (DOHC) design, in an inline configuration, the Ford 1.6L EcoBoost engine is heavily related to the Ford 1.5L EcoBoost I4 engine architecture, but features a larger displacement and its own bespoke exhaust system. It has been part of the Ford EcoBoost family of turbocharged engines since 2014.

Ford’s EcoBoost I4 engines, which also include the Ford EcoBoost 2.0L, and Ford EcoBoost 2.3L, were designed to replace small-displacement, naturally aspirated V6 engines. Their technology allows them to offer comparable performance but with far greater fuel efficiency.

For instance, the 1.6L EcoBoost engine’s cylinder block has an open-deck design. It’s made from high-strength aluminum alloy, leading to a lower overall weight and improved cooling balance. Other key features include very thin cast iron sleeves (liners) that are cast directly into aluminum cylinder walls, a cast iron crankshaft, forged connecting rods, aluminum pistons and a diamond-like-coating (DLC) for piston pins. The oil pan is also made from aluminum.

Like many modern Ford engines, the EcoBoost 1.6L features double overhead belt-driven camshafts and variable intake and exhaust valve timing, or what Ford calls Twin Independent Variable-Cam Timing (Ti-VCT). Finally, the 1.6L engine gets a high-response Borg Warner KP39 low-inertia, water-cooled turbocharger attached to a separate cast iron exhaust manifold (a non-turbo-fold turbocharger system). These technologies help the engine meet Euro-5 European emissions standards. This engine powers the following vehicles:
